It was good they arrived early: It was Slayer, a band that has claimed this tour to be its last, that the young and old had come to see. Featuring an elaborate lights show, Slayer came out roaring with "Repentless," the title track from the final studio album released in Heads banged, fists pumped and fans sang along with every track as if celebrating a kind of catharsis.
With very few words between songs, Araya clean shaven and thinned down didn't have the look of a guy calling it a day. Of the four supporting acts, easily the best was Anthrax. The five piece from New York also sprung to life in the early '80s and has shared many a stage with Slayer.
Anthrax's abbreviated set included the powerful and prophetic opener, "Caught in a Mosh," as well as the band's stunning cover of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time. But all five acts on this seven-hour head banging extravaganza provided key insights as to how metal continues to have a powerful position, even if Slayer claims to be calling it quits on touring.

Health had some postpunk melodies and effects in their sound, but amplified them with scremo, distortion and meddled with loads of overdrive. I would say this is the future of metal really, although I think Deftones did that way before. A bad habit of mine, and probably of many, is to check out the set list before the concert.
I was thrilled to know there was still some element of suspence, as Interpol has been varying some parts of their set list at every one of the Europe tour. The thrill was transformed to bewilderment and elation, because the setlist did not fail me.
This El Pintor tour for me, painted the best atmosphere and soundscape that I would have never imagined being in. These are epic tracks that you can sink yourself into wholly. The other one that is totally befitting of being performed live is The Lighthouse.
Listening to that on CD cannot be compared to hearing it live. The band did a fair bit of their tracks from the latest album, which I am not a huge fan of, but their decision to perform My Desire was a good one, since that was the best track for me. Surprisingly, the crowd seemed to be more enthusiastic about the new songs. This says a lot about the way the latest album has been marketed.
Interpol kept old timers like myself happy with PDA and Untitled. I have no strong feelings for The New, but I appreciate that they tried to revive it. However, Paul seemed rather out of touch with this one. The tempo was a little amiss, but the diehard fan in me will never blame them, will I? The other song that sent me to the clouds was Not Even Jail.
This is one song that will sound impeccable on a good set of headphones or live, but of course the latter wins. Interpol ended their encore with Slow Hands, and the crowd went a little wild, and tried to mosh. Well, just a few lads, but it was amusing because this was an Interpol concert. No surprises seeing some really annoyed glances from girls. I was rejuvenated with my experience of watching them again.
Yes, the boys are getting on in years, and maybe even in skill, but it was an essential dosage for zealot like myself. Live Interpol is an experience every fan should have. The music, the lights, Daniel Kessler's dancing, and the just whole atmosphere. There is a euphoric quality once the band starts up. Usually it begins with the first track from their latest album.
The bass of the drum coincides with the beat of your body, the guitar will resuscitate your heartstrings, and once Paul's lips sing into the microphone you will swoon in tears of delight. The band is not very talkative and they may interact with the crowd here and there.
But, for them it is about the music and intricate orchestration of it all. You will not be displeased. Sam's been known to throw out drumsticks to the crowd, as well as Daniel giving away some guitar picks.
If you happen to be the kind of Interpol fan that not only wants the experience to hear the band live, they are really cool about meeting up with the fans after the show. Taking pictures with the fans, signing countless vinyl, posters, and memorabilia, as well as just pleasurable conversations amongst the fans.
Every time Interpol is in my surrounding area I make sure to buy a ticket and watch these men put on a phenomenal live performance. You'll never forget in your lifetime. I've been a fan since the very beginning and Ive seen them evolve and change through the years. Now with the new record "El Pintor" and the exit of Carlos D of the band, we fans were a little worried about the direction of their music.
The new record wasn't particularly my cup of tea, but it was a whole different experience seeing it live.
It's almost as if it were a different record. The beat of the drums compares equally with the first and fan-loved albums, the sequence of old and new songs doesn't show a difference in time and band changes. I think seeing them live especially on smaller venues is an excellent opportunity to see their music on a different level. And the energy the boys put in the show has always been amazing. Interpol were note perfect and Turn on the Bright Lights is one of the best albums in the last 50 years hands down but Alexandra Palace is simply a terrible venue for live music.
It's not designed to be and it shows. Therefore you don't really see the band and therefore can't really connect with them and what they are trying to do.. I wasn't the only one.. I saw scores of people who gave up and sat in the food area instead and heard a guy on the phone talking to his wife describing it as soulless and I couldn't agree more.
I love the band and cannot blame them, they did nothing wrong but I will never go to another gig at Ally Pally again unless the ghost of Freddie Mercury rises for a one night only special there Sorry Ally Pally but you are a rubbish music venue..
This could have been a great concert by an excellent band in a beautiful venue - but unfortunately Interpol played a very short set, just 1 hr 10 minutes. Obviously the entirety of "Turn On The Bright Lights" was a given since it was the 15th anniversary celebration of the album , but I expected several additional songs and they only played 3 titles as an encore. Some people were literal with dreams being sleepy dreams or daydreams while others considered them more of hopes and dreams ambitions or the difficult to define American Dream.
I enjoyed reading the quotations on the photos. Of course, I enjoyed reading the rest of the article, too! It's interesting to see how the topic of dreams has been interpreted in different songs.
