I completed a tour in Okinawa, rebuilding Camp Kinser for the first large Marine pull-down of troops out of V. I was a IPO based on my background with heavy equipment. I joined the Navy Seabee's to help my Country win in Vietnam. I never received orders to serve in V. Regards to all Navy Seabee's! Joined the main body after steelworker school at Sangley Point PI working on dependent housing.
I was painting window louvers and later caulking all of the Builders errors. Stayed on with the delayed party. Loved that Sam Miguel. Back to Port Hueneme then Guam. Shipped out to detachment on Midway Island for duration of deployment working on Brig and gymnasium. Back to Hueneme and training on operation Silverlance at Camp Pendelton. Went to Okinawa as ready battalion and soon to Chu Lai working 4 on and 8 off laying the runway matting.
I never seen so much sand. After walking in this stuff everyday the saying was "You could kick an elephant in the ass and knock him down". The day I was to leave for discharge in August I had my bags packed and went to pickup my orders for departure.
The official word had just arrived of a 4 month extension. Anyway I finally got discharged from Port Hueneme in Jan Had a great time seeing the world. Had some good times and some bad times but for sure will never forget the experience. My wife visited there last year and Kubasaki is no more. It's wall to wall housing now. We went in by ship.
