When they married her father gave them an estate on the shore which included all the area around where present day Margaretsville sets. This estate sat next to Sir Brenton's father's estate. The Halliburtons had built their summer home in the area in Over the years there have been approx. In , Margaretsville was honored by having a lady in the community with the longest name in Canada: In a local newspaper dated May , it was stated that a building was sold, in which Mr.
Moody of Margaretsville, built the sailing ship Spray in which Capt. Joshua Slocum made his famous solo voyage around the world. A busy port during the early s, Margaretsville is now a placid seaside community favored by tourists , artists and retirees. There is a small local art gallery owned by the Artist's Circle Greenwood, Nova Scotia which sells a variety of art from many local artists. It is called "The Art Shack" and there is always a member of the Artist's Circle on duty to sell art.
There is also lively folk music scene. As all lighthouses are unique the picture on the stamp matches very closely the Margaretsville lighthouse.

From the time you pull into the driveway, enter the quaint covered porch and step back in time through this authentic, enormous log cabin, you're sure to appreciate this lovely home. With a perfect blend of historic preservation, creative touches of class and perfect cleanliness, you won't find gems like this often. It's a restored log cabin! What more could you ask for???
Our daughter was Cheri's first in the log cabin guest as she started a new job in nearby Gaston, NC. Cheri welcomed her and made her feel right at home. The room was spotless and welcoming. The pool was inviting. The coffee was set up and waiting every morning and the fresh blueberry muffins were much appreciated as she nervously headed out on her first day!!!
Cheri was very quick to answer all our inquiries and made herself very available to our daughter for any and all needs and questions. It was a perfect stay!!! First, we have to emphasize that the home really is a beautiful, huge log cabin lodge in downtown Roanoke Rapids. Who would have thought!! We'd also like to add that the house and neighborhood are very safe. Cheri has made sure the decor is comfortable and inviting. Everything was clean clean clean.
For an almost hundred year old home the bedroom, bathroom and the rest of the home was neat and tidy. We stayed on a Saturday night after a long day of motorcycle riding.
We arrived to find covered parking for my Harley. David, Cheri's fiance, was kind enough to make room in the garage for us. Old school really does rule. After arrival we had a very pleasant happy hour getting to know Cheri and David and a little more about their beautiful home. Sunday morning we had a perfect cup of coffee on the front porch.
I highly recommend staying at the Counsel Rye Lodge. The subtle pine scent and swing music playing in the parlor does wonders for your stress. Would stay here again as my first choice for Roanoake Rapids, NC.
House was perfect for what I needed it for. Never met Douglas but he was always available on the phone. I plan to stay here again. We stayed for a weekend and the house was perfect for what we needed. Douglas was very quick to respond when we had questions. The house was very clean and located in a quite, convenient area of Emporia within a mile of most things in the city.
Douglas was very responsive, quick to reply and assist with any issues. Much cheaper than a hotel with more space and a homey ambience. Very nice and clean home, comfy beds and a great little area to watch TV after a long drive. My only complaint was that there was no WiFi, which was hard for my millennial brain to comprehend. All in all, a lovely place. Highly recommend when you need a place to rest off the Hwy. This is a clean, tastefully remodeled home convenient to whatever you need in Emporia.
We enjoyed our stay and would do so again. Douglas is extremely accommodating and very easy to contact and speak with. His house in Emporia is a smart choice for travellers stopping on We were just a couple but it's an ideal spot for families-- there's a cute playground just across the street. Altogether it's a peaceful and quiet place to spend a night or two, and though we're not often in this area we would definitely return or recommend it to others.
Thank you Jill for a great Airbnb experience. We thoroughly recommend her as a great host. Jill is a gracious host and will help you with what ever your needs are. The place is spotlessly clean and close to everything in the area. Highly recommend, will definitely be back. If you are looking for a secluded, mom spacious, relaxing, enjoyable getaway, then look no further! But Jill's home makes up for that with complimentary Wi-Fi service!
Now let me explain to you what I mean by awesome hospitality. Once I arrived at Jill's home and saw that I did not have any service I was able to locate a nearby McDonald's right up the street to use their Wi-Fi to contact Jill to let her know that I was at her home. It didn't take no less than 5 minutes from where she was currently at to be back home to welcome me into her home! Being that I do not consume alcohol she was able to welcome me with sparkling apple cider which was right up my alley!
She also took pride in making me feel welcome being that I was the first ever military service member that stayed at home! Jill is not only a gracious host, but full of knowledge liveliness and experience from all over the world.
It was great having conversation with her and not only that, she was awesome enough to leave myself with parting gifts to take home! The purpose for my trip was to do nothing but relax and relax I did! If you are ever in the area, make this a must in your stay for travel! I assure you, you will not be disappointed! We had more than what we needed and Jill was so accommodating. We will definitely be repeat customers!
Jill is a professor at Chowan. She was terrific, and I loved the house. I will certainly be back. My Airbnb experience at Jill's house was very short but amazing! She worked with me for a late check in and made me feel like home away from home. My room had everything I needed! Thank you so much Jill for your hospitality! This is a wonderful place a bit off It was worth it. A glass of wine was waiting for me and a lovely, spacious room. Everything was spotlessly clean.
I liked it so much that I booked it for my drive back! A professor at Chowan College, Jill is gracious, interesting and a lovely person. I will be back! This is the 2nd time I've stayed with Jill, and she managed to surprise me even more with her care and consideration for her guests.
There were several added touches since the last time I stayed, and it's clear that Jill is committed to making her guests feel like they're at home.
On top of everything, our plans were in constant flux from the moment we arrived, and Jill never batted an eye in terms of working with us and whether or not we'd be able to stay the entire time. Thank you so much, Jill! Please see my other review.
I stopped on my way to SC from MD and it was a great experience! So I came back on my way home. Jill is a charming and wonderful host.
Her home was spotless and interesting. The bed was good and the bedroom was spacious. The place was very clean and completely new! The communication with Jill was easy, fast and uncomplicated. Besides that, the host is extremely respectful of your privacy but if we had questions, she was always pleased to help us out. Save and quiet neighborhood with some good restaurant around. What a wonderful stay! Spacious inviting accommodations coupled with an amazing hostess.
Jill's genuine warmth and gracious hospitality makes you feel comfortable immediately. We will be back! Jill was on spot with quick and helpful communication. Her friendly and down-home personality made for a very relaxing time in her home, and I appreciated the little touches that Jill added.
There was a power adapter in the room that allowed me to use my laptop easily, not to mention a mini-fridge and fresh fruit and hard candy for a quick snack. By the 2nd morning, Jill was making a cup of perfect coffee to hand to me while we chatted. This was such a wonderful experience, and I think I've made a friend to stay in touch with long-term. We had a wonderful stay with Richard, who was a welcoming and gracious host. We especially loved Rudy, Richard's miniature collie.
And the view of the river from the screened porch was delightful! Richard prepared a delicious dinner, and breakfast was a tour de force! It was hard to pry ourselves away, and we'll definitely be back! I arrived very late with my mom , we were greeted by a beautiful , happy dog. Slept very well, Richard made us breakfast, the coffee was great, and we left rather early, but were not woken up by Richard at all who apparently had been up for hours before us. The bed is very comfortable, the sheets are clean and nice quality, the location is great we couldn't enjoy it due to our time crunch.
When arriving, make sure to take the long road into the woods ,the house is not located on a road, and we had no cellphone service. Richard's place was one of my favorite Airbnb experiences ever! I highly recommend checking out this place. It is peaceful and relaxing. The host is great. He was polite, accommodating, generous, and interesting. He really wanted us to have a good time! I recommend this place to anyone looking to get off the beaten path and be in nature.
Also, my girlfriend's young daughter loved the pony and all the animals Richard has on the grounds. Additionally, he cooked a breakfast for us and did not charge us anything extra. I give this place 5 stars easily! We felt like we had been transformed into a Hemingway novel! My husband and I needed a little get away at the Last minute. Richard was not only patient when we arrived late due to traffic but he was the perfect southern host.
He cooked us the most incredible food. Rudy is the happiest little dog. Trigger, the pony is so friendly and loves attention. You MUST stay here! Richard makes you feel right at home! This is a magic Airbnb option! We had the most pleasant experience thanks to Richard's hospitality, amiability and friendliness. The house and grounds are just stunning, if you are a nature lover. This time we visited as a couple with toddler, all snuggled up in one bed, and we loved it. Our baby had a blessing with the pony, chickens, cat and dog!
For sure this place is highly recommended for those who love fishing: We had a perfect experience. Make sure you reach it trough highway , since it is by the South bank of the river.
Our host was really responsive, making sure we could get back on track as soon as we realized that something was not right. Stunningly beautiful noble home Blissful comfortable, clean, quiet space to breathe in nature, far away from manic world yet convenient to highways and byways. Texie is a great host!
I cannot wait to return! Perfect sanctuary for a relaxing and peaceful stay. Would recommend this home to anyone. Thanks again Texie for the hospitality. Tony's home was everything and more of his description. It is spotless with tastefully decorated rooms that reflected his love of antiques. However, the antiques enhanced his decor not over power it. Tony has created a warm, inviting home that speaks to his love of making his guest feel right at home with a that special touch of southern charm down to fluffy soft bathrobes, delicious breakfast and even a tasty snack to spoil you.
After staying at Hall House you will never want to stay at an hotel again. You get a 5 star experience with Great extras. Simply the best hospitality I've ever had using Airbnb. Tony was extremely welcoming, providing dinner and breakfast which we weren't expecting! I can thoroughly recommend staying here. Such a delight to stay at. Will hopefully be staying again real soon. Extremely gracious host, absolutely stunning house, and phenomenal amenities. Will be staying here again without question!
This is better than any hotel you would stay in. Tony is a gracious host and everything is so wonderful. Very clean and very well appointed. The house is incredible, the service was impeccable, and the experience was unforgettable. The Santurary was awesome! Very peacefull warm and inviting. All the rooms are spacious and bedding was very comfortable.
If you would like the country experience to relax and enjoy family time it's the perfect place. Overall Great Place for a hang out with family and friends. Texie was very helpful during the entire duration of stay. Cheri went above and beyond expectations with her hospitality, kindness, breakfast stuff and absolutely love everything she's done with the cabin. The rustic feel, to the fireplace in my LARGE bedroom, the many rooms if you want privacy to the large dining area and nice feel kitchen.
Love the amenities of the pool, board games, dart board and the soon to be pool table ;- I look forward to coming back and staying with Cheri again very soon with more great conversation and wine: I really enjoyed meeting Cheri and spending time in her lovely home!
It was a highlight of our road trip. I highly recommend a visit! Fun, old eccentric house with a ton of character. Pool was great and refreshing. We enjoyed our stay! My husband, our dog and myself thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the beaton-powell home! Lisa was an amazing host and went above and beyond.
The house is beautiful! The room is very spacious as well as the connected private bath. It was very clean and nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable. There were lots of little extras that were appreciated during our stay shower supplies, kitchen supplies and treats, reading materials There was a screened balcony with a homemade swing that was lovely to sit on in the morning with a cup of tea while watching the birds fly around.
She was very welcoming of us bringing our dog. Our dog loved being able to run around in the yard and there were plenty of nice walks to be had around the area.
There are some quaint shops right by the house boykins beans and ice cream was a nice stop. Lisa was always quick to respond to our airbnb messages and had good suggestions for things to do in the area. Staying in this home was one of the highlights of our trip. I would definately recommend. Thanks so much Lisa for opening up your beautiful historic home to us! Lisa was a wonderful host! Although we arrived late she welcomed us, making us feel totally at home.
The lovely room we slept in was incomparable--spacious, spotless, had a super-comfy bed, was well-appointed, lacked nothing. The room and house were out of another era--high, high ceilings, old floor coverings, antiques and colorful artifacts everywhere.
At Lisa's place everything is amazing and going beyond of what we can expect from an airbnb night! Lisa is a great host and make us feel at home. The house is like in the picture: The room is huge, the bed is awesome, the private bathroom is fantastic In a word, we really enjoyed our stay of one night in Boykins and highly recommend Lisa's place.
Lisa and Ellie made me feel right at home. The house was amazing and the room was beautiful. Her house was 30 min from my job but it was well worth the ride.
The room had everything that one would need from snacks to drinks and amenities in the bathroom. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud. I definately would come back to site see. I will miss Ellie dog she was awesome maybe Tonka cat too. I love the house. Lisa also helped me change my reservation to extend it with no problem at all. Once again I can not say enough about my stay!!! I miss Ellie already!!!!!
Lisa was very welcoming, gracious in every way. She provided a fine self serve breakfast in our room with fruit and beverages as well as information about the home and area.
The historic home was very interesting with period furnishings. We enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about history of the home and area. Staying at Lisa's home was like visiting an old friend, and her warm welcome and friendliness was great after a day of traveling. The house was a real historic home with lots of stories. My room was clean and huge, with everything you could want - snacks, AC, wi-fi, a fridge, writing table, and even a clawfoot tub.
I am so glad I found this place, would highly recommend it! Lisa is a very nice hostess. Lisa provide much snacks for us. A good restaurant named Hungry Rooster is just ft on the opposite street. Cheri is a tremendous hostess! She truly loves her home and it shows in every corner. The Counsel Rye is warm, stylish, inviting and comfortable.
